In 2012, an agency owner who was 10 years older than me asked me to lunch. He was fishing around for someone to buy his firm.
“Chris, when you get into your mid-sixties like I am, people start to look at you differently,” he said. “They see me and they say, ‘he’s just an old guy about to retire.’ They don’t want to hire me anymore.”
His words reverberated with me. When I looked at him, he had a full head of gray hair and short gray beard. It only reinforced my fears of how people were assessing my looks.
