In my presentation training seminars, I often asked students to list the attributes of powerful presenters. “Speaking with authority” always made the top 10.
It’s easy to confuse authority with power yet the two are quite different. Power works from the outside in, while authority works from the inside out. Of the two, authority is more significant for authority possesses the capacity to convince. At the core of the word “authority” is the word “author.”
Authority is awarded to those who author their own words, actions and lives rather than assume roles that do not authentically resonate with the heart.
